The Importance of Wearing a Mouthguard During Sports
Many sports, including football, lacrosse, hockey and boxing require the use of mouthguards.
Not only does this prevent damage to the athlete’s teeth, it can also help prevent jaw injuries, cuts to the lip, tongue or face and can also reduce the incidences and severity of concussions.
In fact, an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth when not wearing a mouthguard. For these reasons, many people advocate their use in other “non-contact” sports such as basketball, baseball, volleyball and gymnastics. It is estimated that mouthguards prevent more than 200,000 injuries each year!
While there are several types of mouthguards available for use, including a couple of over-the-counter options, a custom mouthguard is the most effective at protecting the athlete.
A custom mouthguard is made by a dentist. These mouthguards are made from impressions taken of the athlete’s mouth at the dental office and therefore provide a precise fit and better overall protection. Although a custom mouthguard does cost more, it is more likely to prevent injury and therefore could save thousands of dollars in dental related injuries.
Mouthguards need to be cared for properly and replaced as needed. The athlete should refrain from chewing the mouthguard or cutting any piece away. It should be brushed before and after use, stored in a vented, sturdy container and it should not be exposed to sun or hot water (to prevent distortion). It is also important to note the athlete should not wear other devices (e.g. retainers) at the same time they are wearing their mouthguard.
